I’m excited to share something I’ve been working on for a while: Horizon-AR. (Actually, it started on the trip to Zurich.)
It is a free augmented-reality astronomy app now available on the Apple App Store.
Point your phone at the sky, and Horizon-AR shows you exactly where the Sun, Moon, planets, and deep-sky Messier objects are, overlaid directly on your camera view and aligned with the real horizon in front of you. Not sure which fuzzy patch in the eyepiece is M42? Just hold up your phone. Curious where Jupiter will rise tonight? It’s right there on screen.
What’s inside:
- Live AR tracking — the Sun, Moon, all major planets, and the full Messier catalogue, rendered over your camera in real time
- Camera optional — prefer a plain sky view? The overlay works just as well without the camera
- Messier detail cards — tap any deep-sky object for a description and a preview image
- Portrait & landscape — hold your phone however feels natural; the horizon line and objects stay exactly where they should be
- Completely free — no ads, no subscriptions, no paywalls
Google Play is coming soon — Android support is actively in development and will follow.
